Himalyan mudslide tragedy serves as a warning on fragility of glaciers

The recent mudslide in the Himalayas serves as a warning: once a certain threshold is crossed, a glacier can transform into a trigger for cascading disasters. Also in this newsletter: China has provided Nepal with a customized cloud‑based version of its homegrown MAZU (Multi-hazard, Alert, Zero-gap and Universal) meteorological early warning system to aid rescue efforts in the wake of the deadly cross‑border mudslide. CGTN also spoke with two experts about glacial disasters, climate change, monitoring and early warning: Zhang Dongqi, a research scientist at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences' Institute of Global Change and Polar Meteorology, and Ma Lijuan, a research scientist at the National Climate Center's Division of Climate Change Monitoring and Projection.
